Rexroth Proportional Valve Working Principle for Application Decisions

The Rexroth proportional valve working principle is based on a variable electrical command changing hydraulic behavior rather than switching the valve only fully open or fully closed. Depending on the valve family, the command may change spool position, metering area or a pressure-control element, which then changes flow direction, flow magnitude or regulated pressure.

Understanding that chain helps buyers interpret model codes and avoid a common mistake: treating every “24 V proportional valve” as if it used the same electronics, feedback and command signal.

From electrical command to hydraulic output

  1. The machine controller generates an analog or digital command value.

  2. Valve electronics or an external amplifier convert that command into controlled solenoid current.

  3. Electromagnetic force moves the spool or pressure-control element against spring and hydraulic forces.

  4. The new position changes the metering opening or pressure-control balance.

  5. Hydraulic flow or pressure changes in proportion to the commanded operating point within the valve’s designed range.

This is the core difference from a conventional on/off directional valve, which normally switches between defined spool positions.

Open-loop and position-feedback designs behave differently

Some proportional valves do not use electrical spool position feedback. Bosch Rexroth’s 4WRA selector, for example, includes direct-operated proportional directional valves without electrical position feedback and distinguishes versions with external electronics from versions with integrated electronics.

Other families use electrical position feedback. A 4WRE/4WREE valve can measure spool position and use that signal in the control loop, which improves the relationship between command and actual spool position. The exact control quality still depends on the valve, operating conditions and system design.

The new model list shows several proportional architectures

Model referenceWorking-principle point
R900954088 — 4WRAE10W60-2X/G24K31/A1VIntegrated electronics; ±10 V command version; no electrical spool position feedback in the 4WRA family.

R901280845 — 3DREE10P-7X/200YG24K31F1VProportional pressure-reducing valve; command signal changes the regulated downstream pressure rather than just flow direction.
R901439036 — VT-MSPA1-2X/F5/000/000External valve-amplifier module reference; 24 VDC and 4–20 mA command version for compatible proportional valves.

Integrated electronics and external amplifiers

With integrated electronics (OBE), signal conditioning and current control are built into the valve assembly. With external electronics, a separate amplifier in the control cabinet performs those functions. Neither architecture is automatically better; the right choice depends on the machine controller, service strategy, wiring and required feedback.

The Rexroth proportional valve procurement guide covers these integration questions from a purchasing perspective. This article stays focused on the operating principle behind them.

Why command signal and feedback matter in practice

  • A ±10 V command and a 4–20 mA command are not interchangeable without checking the controller and valve interface.

  • Position feedback can change commissioning and diagnostics because the actual spool position becomes part of the control loop.

  • Rated flow is linked to defined pressure-differential conditions, so command percentage should not be read as a universal L/min value.

  • Fail-safe or de-energized spool behavior should be reviewed for the exact valve and machine circuit.

  • Oil cleanliness and hydraulic forces still influence performance even when the electronics are correct.

Proportional pressure control uses the same idea for a different output

The updated inventory reference R901280845 3DREE10P-7X/200YG24K31F1V shows why “proportional” does not always mean directional flow control. Published data identifies it as a proportional pressure-reducing valve with integrated electronics and a 4–20 mA command interface. In that architecture, the electrical command changes the regulated pressure target in the downstream branch.

This is a useful application distinction: first decide whether the machine needs variable flow direction/magnitude or variable pressure, then choose the relevant proportional family.

Application questions that follow from the working principle

QuestionWhy it matters
What does the command value represent?Flow/spool position, pressure target or another controlled variable.
Is electronics integrated or external?Determines wiring, amplifier needs and replacement scope.
Is spool position feedback present?Changes control-loop behavior and diagnostics.
What is the command interface?Must match PLC/controller output.
At what Δp is nominal flow specified?Needed to interpret flow ratings correctly.
What happens at power loss?Defines de-energized/fail-safe behavior for the machine.

FAQ

How does a Rexroth proportional valve differ from an on/off valve?

A proportional valve uses a variable command to position a hydraulic control element over a range, while an on/off valve generally switches between defined states.

Does every Rexroth proportional valve have position feedback?

No. Some families operate without electrical spool position feedback, while others use feedback as part of the control loop.

What does integrated electronics mean?

The valve includes electronics that process the external command and control the solenoid current; the exact interface still depends on the configuration.

Why does nominal flow depend on pressure differential?

The hydraulic flow through the metering edges depends on the pressure difference across them, so rated flow must be read with the manufacturer’s test condition.

What should I send for a proportional-valve inquiry?

Send the complete material number, required hydraulic function, pressure and flow data, supply voltage, command signal, feedback requirement, amplifier information and mounting interface.

Use the working principle to narrow the application

Understanding the Rexroth proportional valve working principle helps separate hydraulic selection from electrical integration. Define what the command should change, whether feedback is required and where the electronics sit in the control chain before comparing exact models.
